Kindred Hospital Toledo

Toledo Ohio. Client: Kindred Healthcare Inc., Louisville KY.

This 70,000 square foot Acute Care Hospital facility delivers state of the art care for 70 ventilator dependent patients, and is an example of how a vacant big box grocery in a retail shopping center can be transformed into a valuable community asset.

Housed in the facilty are departments for diagnostic imaging, including flouroscopy and computed tomography, respiratory therapy, an interventional department with two operating rooms,  a 10 bed intensive care unit, pharmacy, laboratory and an out-patient physical therapy suite. The location of a major highway was a primary asset offering easy access and ample parking in the retail shopping center.

The design focused on the economy of utilizing the existing building shell. To comply with code requirements to provide patients outdoor views, two courtyards were created within the structural bays of the existing structure. A new engineering building provides a central location for new mechanical and electrical services. Adjacent to engineering, enclosed emergency generator and bulk oxygen is provided on site. New drive up canopies were added for access to the main entrance and for ambulance service. Design ecnomy included the judicious use of metal panels to unify the new design.
